Summer Math Bridge

Early exposure to the key mathematical concepts of the upcoming grade level.

The Purpose of the Program

The Summer Math Bridge program provides students with early exposure to mathematical concepts they will encounter in the upcoming school year. These small-group courses introduce key ideas ahead of formal classroom instruction, allowing students to become familiar with new concepts before they are required to master them.

Through focused instruction, guided practice, and supportive teaching, students develop confidence and conceptual familiarity that can make future classroom learning more approachable.

Because the program is only four weeks in length, the goal is not mastery. Instead, students leave the course with a foundation of understanding that helps them engage more confidently when these topics are introduced during the school year.

Why These Transition Points Matter

Mathematics becomes significantly more complex at several key stages in a student's education. The Summer Math Bridge focuses on these transition points when students move from addition and subtraction into multiplication and division, from whole numbers into fractions and ratios, and from arithmetic into algebraic thinking.

Early exposure to these concepts allows students to approach classroom instruction with familiarity rather than encountering entirely new ideas for the first time. Research in learning and cognitive science suggests that early exposure to new concepts can significantly improve a student's ability to understand and retain those ideas when they encounter them again during formal instruction.

While many students participate in the Summer Math Bridge to gain early exposure before entering the next grade level, the courses may also serve as a structured review for students who have already encountered these topics and would benefit from revisiting them before moving further in their math sequence.

Courses Offered

Multiplication & Division Foundation

For students entering 3rd and 4th grades

• rising 3rd → pre-exposure
• rising 4th → reinforcement

Focus:

  • developing multiplication fluency and fact families

  • introduction to division and the concept of equal groups

  • early exposure to long division strategies

  • strengthening number sense and problem solving

Fractions & Middle School Math Bridge

For students entering 6th and 7th grades

• rising 6th → pre-exposure
• rising 7th → reinforcement

Focus:

  • strengthening fraction operations and number sense

  • introduction to ratios and proportional thinking

  • understanding variables and simple equations

  • building early algebraic reasoning

Algebra Foundations

For students entering 9th and 10th grades

• rising 9th → pre-exposure
• rising 10th → reinforcement

Focus:

  • strengthening fluency with integer operations and rational numbers

  • understanding variables, expressions, and algebraic notation

  • translating real-world situations into algebraic expression one- and two- step equations

  • developing algebraic reasoning and problem solving

Program Schedule

Two session options are available during the summer.

Session One: JUNE
Session Two: JULY

Each session includes:

  • 4 weeks

  • 2 classes per week

  • 60 minutes per class

  • small-group instruction (4-8 students per group)

Important Note: Students who would benefit from additional review of foundational skills prior to encountering new concepts are encouraged to consider enrolling in the JULY session after completing the Math Foundations Intensive offered in JUNE.

This sequence allows students to strengthen foundational skills before participating in the Summer Math Bridge
